Barasat is a city located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. It is situated approximately 30 kilometers north of Kolkata and serves as the headquarters of the district. 1. In 1857, a rebellion erupted in Bārāsat against the British East India Company during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
2. Raja Ram Mohan Roy, the founder of Brahmo Samaj and a famous social reformer, was born in Radhanagar village near Bārāsat.
3. Jagadish Chandra Bose, a renowned physicist and biologist who made significant contributions to the study of radio waves and plant physiology, spent his childhood in Bārāsat although he was born in Mymensingh (now Bangladesh).
4. Khudiram Bose, a revolutionary freedom fighter who played an important role in India’s independence movement, was also born near Bārāsat.
5. Sir Gurudas Banerjee, a prominent lawyer and politician who served as a member of the Bengal Legislative Council hailed from Bārāsat.
6. Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy is one of India’s most celebrated physicians and politicians who served as Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 until his death in 1962; he had established several health facilities for leprosy patients at Barasat where he had close association.
7. Satyajit Ray is a legendary filmmaker, screenwriter, music composer graphic artist and author hailing from Kolkata but spent his early years at Sukumar Ray’s ancestral home at Garpar near Barasat where he developed an interest in filmmaking while watching films screened by his father on weekends.
8. Swami Vivekananda visited Barasat twice – once to attend an assembly organized by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore at Jorasanko Thakurbari when he delivered lecture on The Real Nature Of Man on January 23rd ,1886; again on November 22nd &23rd ,1897 when he visited Ramakrishna Math and Mission located at Barasat.
