Beira is a port city located in central Mozambique on the Indian Ocean coastline. It is the fourth-largest city in Mozambique and serves as a gateway to other major cities such as Harare and Johannesburg. The city has a rich history with Portuguese colonial influence evident in its architecture and culture. The city was founded by Portuguese explorers in the late 19th century who were looking for an alternative trade route to Zimbabwe. Its strategic location made it an important trading hub for goods such as cotton, Sugar, Tea, And tobacco.

Sports Teams

  1. Grupo Desportivo da Companhia Têxtil do Punguè (GDCTP): This soccer team was established in 1954 and is one of the oldest and most successful teams in Beira. They have won the Mozambican Championship thrice (1968, 1970, and 1973) and were runners-up six times.
  2. Ferroviário de Beira: This soccer team was founded in 1922 by railway workers and is also known as Os Locomotivas. They have won the Mozambican Championship four times (1986, 1999, 2011, and 2017) and were runners-up five times.
  3. Clube Ferroviário da Manga: This soccer team was created in the early ’90s by railway workers from the Manga district of Beira. Although they have won several local tournaments, they haven’t yet secured a national championship.
  4. Clube de Basquetebol de Sofala: This basketball team emerged in the late ’70s and has been one of the most successful basketball teams in Mozambique over time; winning several national championships.
  5. Associação Desportiva e Recreativa do Chiveve (ADRC): Founded by residents of Chiveve neighborhood of Beira back in 1949; ADRC is a multi-sport club that offers various sports including soccer, basketball volleyball handball among others to both children as well as adults who want to compete at different levels locally or nationally within Mozambique’s sporting scene.
