Birgañj, Also known as Birgunj, Is a city in the Parsa district of Nepal. It shares its border with Raxaul, A town in the Indian state of Bihar. The city has a population of approximately 200, 000 people and is considered one of Nepal’s most important industrial hubs. Birgañj has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It was once an essential trade center during the Malla dynasty and later ruled by various kingdoms before being annexed by Nepal in 1816.

During India’s struggle for independence, Birgañj served as a base for many freedom fighters who fought against British rule. Today, Birgañj is known for its bustling markets and vibrant street life. Adarsh Nagar is the main market area that offers everything from clothes to electronics at reasonable prices. Ghantaghar Chowk is another popular market area where locals come to buy fresh produce like fruits and vegetables. One of Birgañj’s main attractions is Shankaracharya Gate which marks the entrance into Nepal from India.

This gate was built in honor of Shankaracharya, An Indian philosopher who visited this region during his travels across India. The city also boasts several religious sites such as Gahawa Mai Temple which attracts devotees from all over Nepal and India. Another popular temple is Ram Janaki Mandir which houses beautiful statues made out of white marble depicting Lord Ram along with his consort Sita.   5. Maghe Sankranti marks the beginning of a new year according to Nepali calendar as well as end of winter solstice month Magh which falls on January 14th every year as per Gregorian calendar). The day begins by taking a holy bath at riverside early morning followed by eating sweet dishes like ghee-chiura (flattened rice mixed with clarified butter) along with sesame laddus (a sweet made from sesame seeds).
