Chaoyang is a district located in the heart of Beijing, China. It covers an area of approximately 470 square kilometers and has a population of over 3 million people. Chaoyang was first established as a county during the Ming Dynasty and has since developed into a thriving economic hub with numerous commercial centers and business districts. Some of China’s biggest companies such as Lenovo, Huawei Technologies, And Sinopec Group are located in Chaoyang.

The district is also home to several landmarks including the CCTV Tower which houses China Central Television (CCTV) and Sanlitun Village which boasts high-end shopping malls, Restaurants serving both Chinese and international cuisine, Bars, Nightclubs, Art galleries, Cinemas among other entertainment options. Chaoyang also has several parks including Tuanjiehu Park which is one of the largest parks in Beijing covering an area of around 47 hectares. Noteable History

  1. In 1928, the Japanese Imperial Army committed a heinous act by massacring thousands of Chinese civilians in Chaoyang during their invasion of China.
  2. The Chinese army achieved a significant victory against the invading Japanese forces in the Battle of Taierzhuang, which occurred near Chaoyang in 1938.
  3. Wang Jingwei, a prominent politician and military leader during the early years of the Republic of China, was born in Chaoyang in 1883.
  4. Zhang Xueliang, also known as The Young Marshal, was born in Chaoyang in 1901 and played an important role as a warlord and military commander during China’s War of Resistance against Japan.
  5. Li Dazhao lived and worked as a teacher and journalist for several years in Chaoyang before his arrest and execution by nationalist forces for being a founding member of the Communist Party of China back in 1927.
  6. Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward campaign from 1958 to 1962 resulted in widespread famine and suffering across much northern China due to forced participation from people living around rural areas near Chaoyang into large-scale agricultural projects.
  7. From 1966 to1976, Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution caused devastating consequences for millions throughout China including those living near Chaoyang who were subjected to political persecution and violence by Red Guards militias sent from Beijing.
  8. Due to its strategic location connecting Northeastern provinces with other parts of China, Chaoyang has seen tremendous growth since late-20th century becoming an important transportation hub leading to high-rise buildings construction boom along with modern infrastructure projects taking place there nowadays.
