Cluj-Napoca, Also known as Cluj, Is Romania’s fourth largest city and the unofficial capital of Transylvania. Noteable History

  1. Cluj-Napoca was founded by the Romans in 106 AD, originally named Napoca, and served as a significant military and administrative center for the Dacia province.
  2. King Matthias Corvinus (1443-1490) designated Cluj-Napoca as his capital city, transforming it into a cultural hub of Renaissance Europe.
  3. In the 16th century, Cluj-Napoca became part of the Principality of Transylvania ruled by Hungarian princes until World War I.
  4. Avram Iancu (1824-1872), a Romanian lawyer and politician, led an uprising against Hungarian rule in Transylvania in 1848-1849.
  5. After World War I ended, Romania annexed Cluj-Napoca when Transylvania united with Romania on December 1st, 1918.
