Hancheng is a city situated in the Shaanxi province of China. The city has a long and illustrious history that dates back to the Han Dynasty, From 206 BC to 220 AD. During this era, Hancheng was known as Changwu and served as a crucial military stronghold for the Han Empire. Presently, Hancheng is a modern metropolis with more than 500, 000 inhabitants.   1. The Battle of Hancheng occurred in 1947 during the Chinese Civil War, where the Communist Party of China fought against the Nationalist Party. This battle lasted several months and ended with a victory for the Communists.
  2. Emperor Wu of Han was a well-known Chinese emperor who ruled from 141 BC to 87 BC during the Han Dynasty. He is credited with expanding and consolidating Han territory while establishing a centralized bureaucracy.
  3. Yang Guifei was an imperial consort during the Tang Dynasty known for her beauty, born in Hancheng (then called Yongle) in 719 AD.
  4. Li Bai, also known as Li Po, was a famous Tang Dynasty poet born in Hancheng (then called Suyab) who lived from 701 to 762 AD.
  5. Zhang Xianzhong led an uprising against Ming Dynasty government as a rebel leader and captured Hancheng in 1644 before being defeated by Qing forces.
  6. Xuanzang was a Buddhist monk who traveled to India during the Tang Dynasty to study Buddhism and bring back scriptures to China; he passed through Hancheng on his journey.
  7. Wang Mang reigned as an emperor of Xin Dynasty from 45 BC to AD23; he instituted many unpopular reforms that eventually led to his downfall among his subjects’ dissatisfaction.
  8. The Yan’an Rectification Movement launched by Mao Zedong aimed at purging counter-revolutionary elements within Communist Party ranks during the Chinese Communist Revolution; it began in Yan’an but later spread throughout China including Hancheng where it had significant impact on local politics.
  9. Liu Zhidan, born in Hancheng in 1914, served as People’s Liberation Army general fighting for communist forces both World War II and later as part of Mao Zedong’s Red Army until he died commanding Chinese troops during Korean War.
