Huozhou is a city situated in the Shanxi province of China, Covering an area of 1, 685 square kilometers and with a population of over 600, 000 people. The city is located on the banks of the Fen River and surrounded by mountains, Making it a picturesque destination to visit. One of the most popular attractions in Huozhou is the Huozhou Pagoda – an ancient structure built during the Tang Dynasty that stands at over 50 meters tall. Visitors can climb to its top for breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Another must-visit location is Huaqing Palace Hot Springs Resort where visitors can relax in natural hot springs while enjoying beautiful scenery. Huozhou boasts a rich cultural heritage that can be seen in its many temples and museums. The Guanyin Temple, Dating back to the Ming Dynasty houses an impressive collection of Buddhist artifacts while Shanxi Museum showcases Folk Customs and Culture.

Nature lovers have several options worth exploring as well such as Yuntai Mountain National Geopark featuring stunning rock formations shaped by millions of years’ worth erosion or Wutai Mountain Scenic Area – one among China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains where visitors hike through beautiful forests and see ancient temples.     Noteable History

    1. The Battle of Huozhou occurred in 684 AD during the Tang Dynasty. Rebel forces led by Li Jingye fought against imperial troops led by Emperor Gaozong’s general Pei Xingjian. The rebels were defeated, and Li Jingye was captured and executed.
    2. Wang Chonghui was a famous painter from Huozhou who lived during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). He was renowned for his realistic depictions of landscapes and flowers.
    3. A section of the Great Wall that dates back to the Ming Dynasty can be found in Huozhou.
    4. Zhang Zuolin was a warlord who controlled much of northeastern China during the early 20th century. Although he was born in nearby Haicheng, he spent much time in Huozhou.
    5. Hong Xiuquan was a leader of the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), which aimed to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and establish a new Christian-based dynasty in China. He grew up near Huozhou but later moved to Guangdong Province.
    6. Lao She, a famous Chinese writer, best known for his novel Rickshaw Boy, lived and taught in Huoxian county during World War II.
    7. Huozhou has been affected by numerous floods caused by the Yellow River throughout history. The river runs through Shanxi Province, and some floods have been among human history’s deadliest natural disasters.
    8. Hu Yizhi, a medical scientist, born on December 17th, 1924, in Huoxian county discovered artemisinin, a drug used to treat malaria. He made significant contributions to medicine research globally.
