Noteable History

1. The Minoan civilization flourished on the island of Crete, with Irákleio as one of its key cities. The Palace of Knossos, a significant symbol of Minoan culture and one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites, is located just outside Irákleio.
2. In the 13th century, Venice conquered Crete and established it as part of the Venetian Republic. During this time, Irákleio became an important commercial center and was fortified with walls and bastions that still stand today.
3. El Greco, a renowned painter born in Irákleio in 1541, spent much of his career working in Spain but drew inspiration from Byzantine art from his native Crete.
4. During World War II, German forces occupied Irákleio from 1941 to 1945 resulting in devastating damage to many buildings which had to be rebuilt after the war.
