Kalār is a charming town located in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate of Iraq, Nestled in the foothills of the Zagros Mountains. The area is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and diverse wildlife. With a population of around 10, 000 people, Kalār boasts a rich mix of different ethnic groups. One of Kalār’s most notable attractions is its ancient fortress, Which has stood watch over the town for centuries. The town’s bazaar or market is also worth visiting to experience local culture firsthand by sampling fresh produce or purchasing handmade crafts and clothing. Noteable History

  1. Kalār, Iraq is a small town with a rich history.
  2. During the Abbasid Caliphate (750-1258), it was an important center for Islamic scholarship and learning, with many famous scholars living and teaching in the town during this period.
  3. Unfortunately, Kalār was one of the many towns destroyed during the Mongol invasion of Iraq in 1258.
  4. During the Ottoman Empire (1534–1918), Kalār served as a regional administrative center as part of the Mosul Vilayet.
  5. In 1915, British forces captured Kalār from Ottoman forces during World War I.
  6. One notable figure associated with Kalār is Sheikh Mahmud Barzanji (1884–1956), a Kurdish nationalist leader who fought against British colonialism in Iraq. He was born in a nearby village called Barzan and became known as The Lion of Kurdistan.
  7. Despite not having many specific events or people associated with it, Kalār’s location in northern Iraq has made it historically significant due to its proximity to other important cities such as Mosul and Kirkuk.
