Koidu is a city located in the eastern region of Sierra Leone, Renowned for its diamond mining industry. It serves as the capital of Kono District and has a population of roughly 120, 000 inhabitants. The name Koidu translates to market in the local Kono language, Reflecting its roots as a trading hub. The city’s economy primarily revolves around diamond mining, With numerous large-scale mines operating within and around Koidu. The most notable among them is the Koidu Kimberlite Project owned by Octea Mining Limited.

This project has been operational since 2003 and has produced some of the largest diamonds globally. Aside from diamond mining, Agriculture also plays a crucial role in the local economy. Farmers cultivate crops such as rice, Cassava, Yams, And maize on small plots of land surrounding the city. Koidu boasts of rich cultural heritage that reflects its diverse ethnic mix. The majority of residents belong to the Kono ethnic group; however significant populations of Mende and Temne people also exist there.
