Laiyang is a city in Shandong Province, China with a population of over 900, 000 people. It covers an area of 1, 310 square kilometers and is located on the coast of the Yellow Sea about 150 kilometers southeast of Qingdao. The city has a rich history dating back to the Qin Dynasty and was an important center for agriculture and commerce during the Han Dynasty. In modern times, Laiyang has become an industrial center with a focus on agriculture and food processing. Mount Kunyu is one of Laiyang’s most notable attractions due to its natural beauty and historical significance.

Visitors can see cultural relics such as temples, Pagodas, Inscriptions and sculptures scattered throughout Mount Kunyu. Donglai Beach is another popular destination in Laiyang that stretches along the coast for over ten kilometers.   1. Battle of Laiyang (1894): During the First Sino-Japanese War, the Battle of Laiyang was fought between Japanese and Chinese forces in September 1894. The battle ended in a Japanese victory.
  2. Sun Tzu: Sun Tzu, the famous ancient Chinese military strategist and philosopher, is believed to have been born in Laiyang.
  3. Liu Shaoqi: Liu Shaoqi was a prominent Chinese revolutionary and politician who served as the President of China from 1959 until his downfall during the Cultural Revolution in 1968. He was born in Ningxiang County but grew up in Laiyang.
  4. Wang Xizhi: Wang Xizhi was a renowned calligrapher from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). He is considered one of the greatest calligraphers in Chinese history and is said to have visited Laiyang during his travels.
  5. Deng Xiaoping: Deng Xiaoping was a prominent Chinese politician who played a key role in modernizing China’s economy after Mao Zedong’s death. He visited Laiyang several times during his political career, including once to inspect local agricultural production.
  6. Zhang Guotao: Zhang Guotao was one of the founding members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and an important figure during China’s early revolutionary period. He spent some time living and working with peasants in Laiyang before joining Mao Zedong’s Red Army.
  7. Li Hongzhang: Li Hongzhang was an influential statesman and general who served as Viceroy of Zhili Province during Qing Dynasty rule over China (1644-1912). He oversaw many modernization projects throughout northern China, including several railways that passed through or near Laiyang.
