Lira is a bustling town located in northern Uganda, Approximately 220 kilometers from the capital city of Kampala. Noteable History

  1. The LRA insurgency: The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency was a brutal conflict that lasted for over two decades in northern Uganda, including Lira. The rebel group led by Joseph Kony committed numerous atrocities against civilians, including abductions, killings, and mutilations.
  2. Archbishop Janani Luwum: Janani Luwum was the Anglican Archbishop of Uganda who spoke out against the human rights abuses committed by then-president Idi Amin in the 1970s. He was arrested and later killed under mysterious circumstances in 1977.
  3. Dr. Milton Obote: Milton Obote was a Ugandan politician who served as prime minister from 1962 to 1966 and president from 1966 to 1971 and again from 1980 to 1985. He played a significant role in shaping Uganda’s political landscape during his time in office.
