Novoshakhtinsk is a city located in the Rostov Oblast region of southwestern Russia. The city is situated on the eastern bank of the Don River, Approximately 60 kilometers south of Rostov-on-Don, The regional capital. Novoshakhtinsk has a population of around 100, 000 people and covers an area of 120 square kilometers. The city was founded in 1931 as a mining settlement and was named after its main industry – coal mining (shakhta means mine in Russian). The coal mines played a significant role in the development of Novoshakhtinsk’s economy and infrastructure.

However, After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Many mines were closed down due to lack of funding and decreased demand for coal. Today, Novoshakhtinsk’s economy is diversified with industries such as food processing, Construction materials production, And machine-building.
