It serves as the administrative center of the North Kazakhstan region and has a population of around 200, 000 people. The city was established in 1752 by Russian settlers and was initially known as Koryakovskaya, Named after its founder Ivan Koryakov. During the 19th century, Petropavl played a crucial role in facilitating trade between Russia and China. It served as a significant stop on the Great Siberian Road that linked Moscow to Beijing.
