Santa Clarita is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. It is situated about 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles and has a population of approximately 220, 000 people. The city was incorporated in 1987 and is known for its picturesque landscapes, Outdoor recreation opportunities and rich history. One of the most popular attractions in Santa Clarita is Six Flags Magic Mountain which features a variety of thrilling roller coasters and other amusement park rides. The park also hosts special events throughout the year such as Fright Fest during Halloween season.

Noteable History

  1. The Tataviam Native American tribe inhabited the Santa Clarita Valley for thousands of years before the arrival of European settlers.
  2. In 1769, Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá and his expedition passed through the Santa Clarita Valley on their way to Monterey Bay.
  3. In 1842, Francisco Lopez discovered gold in Placerita Canyon, sparking California’s first gold rush.
  4. The historic Saugus Cafe opened in 1887 and is still in operation today as one of Santa Clarita’s oldest restaurants.
  5. In 1928, William S. Hart, a silent film actor and cowboy star, donated his ranch to Los Angeles County to become a public park that is now known as William S. Hart Park.
  6. The St. Francis Dam disaster occurred on March 12, 1928 when the dam collapsed and caused a massive flood that killed over 400 people in the surrounding area.
  7. The Newhall Incident occurred on April 6, 1970 when four California Highway Patrol officers were ambushed by two heavily armed criminals in Newhall resulting in three officers being killed and one injured.
  8. Magic Mountain amusement park opened in Valencia in May of 1971 and has become one of Southern California’s most popular tourist attractions.
  9. Actress Helen Hunt was born and raised in Sherman Oaks which is part of the greater Los Angeles area including Santa Clarita.
