Soio is a small city in the northwest region of Angola, Located in the province of Zaire. It is situated on the banks of the Congo River, Which serves as a natural boundary between Angola and its neighboring country, The Democratic Republic of Congo. Soio has a population of approximately 50, 000 people and covers an area of about 2, 500 square kilometers. The city’s economy is mainly driven by agriculture and fishing. The fertile soils around Soio produce crops such as cassava, Maize, Beans, And peanuts.

The Congo River provides an abundance of fish species such as tilapia and catfish that are caught by local fishermen using traditional methods. Additionally, There are small-scale industries that produce goods like soap and palm oil. Soio has a rich cultural heritage that can be traced back to pre-colonial times when it was part of the Kingdom of Kongo. The city’s name itself comes from one of the traditional rulers who once ruled over this area. Today visitors can see remnants from this period like ancient rock carvings at nearby sites like Kissama National Park.

The colonial era also left its mark on Soio with several buildings built during this time still standing today including churches like Igreja de Sao Joao Baptista (St John Baptist Church) which was constructed in 1895 by Portuguese colonizers.
