Noteable History

  1. The Boxer Rebellion: In 1900, a group of Chinese nationalists known as the Boxers launched an uprising against foreign influence in China. Tianjin was one of the cities that was besieged during the rebellion.
  2. The Treaty of Tianjin: In 1858, after China’s defeat in the Second Opium War, the Qing government signed a treaty with Britain, France, and other Western powers at Tianjin. The treaty opened up several Chinese ports to foreign trade and granted extraterritorial rights to foreigners living in China.
  3. Li Hongzhang: Li Hongzhang (1823-1901) was a prominent statesman and military leader during the late Qing dynasty. He played a key role in negotiating treaties with Western powers and modernizing China’s military.
  4. Zhang Xueliang: Zhang Xueliang (1901-2001) was a warlord who controlled much of northeastern China during the early 20th century. He is best known for his role in kidnapping Chiang Kai-shek in 1936 and forcing him to form an alliance with Communist forces against Japan.
  5. Marco Polo Bridge Incident: On July 7, 1937, Japanese troops stationed near Tianjin clashed with Chinese forces at the Marco Polo Bridge outside Beijing (then called Peking). This incident marked the beginning of full-scale war between Japan and China that would last until 1945.
  6. Deng Xiaoping: Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997) was a revolutionary leader who played a key role in modernizing China’s economy after Mao Zedong’s death in 1976. He visited Tianjin several times during his career as part of efforts to promote economic development there.
