Tshikapa is a city in the Kasai Province of Congo (Kinshasa), Located on the banks of the Tshikapa River.   8. After Mobutu’s ouster in 1997, Congo descended into civil war that lasted until 2003 and claimed millions of lives through violence and disease.
  9. Joseph Kabila succeeded his father Laurent Kabila as president at age 29 after his father’s assassination in 2001; he served until stepping down following controversial elections in December 2018.
