Unnao is a city in Uttar Pradesh, India on the banks of the Ganges River. It has a rich cultural heritage with historical monuments such as Bhitargaon Temple and Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary. Noteable History

  1. The Battle of Buxar in 1764, which was fought between the British East India Company and the combined forces of Mir Qasim, Shuja-ud-Daula and Shah Alam II.
  2. Raja Todar Mal, a prominent minister in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar, who is credited with introducing revenue reforms that helped to streamline the administration of the empire.
  3. Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi, who was born in nearby Varanasi but spent some time in Unnāo as a child before becoming a symbol of resistance against British rule during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
  4. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, a socialist leader and freedom fighter who was born in Akbarpur near Unnāo and played an important role in India’s struggle for independence.
  5. Mahatma Gandhi visited Unnao twice; once on October 27th 1929 when he addressed a large gathering at Chakarpur village near Bangarmau town to propagate his views on non-cooperation movement against British Government; secondly on January 26th 1932 when he visited Kalli Paschim village to meet his friend Seth Govind Das Gupta’s family where he stayed for two days.
  6. Swami Vivekananda also visited Unnao during his travels across India to spread his message of Vedanta philosophy and spirituality among people.
