It was one of the first cities in China to open up to foreign trade during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), Which led to its rapid economic growth and development.

  1. The Battle of Fei River: This battle took place in 383 AD between the Eastern Jin dynasty and the Former Qin dynasty. It was fought near Wenzhou and resulted in a victory for the Eastern Jin.
  2. The Tang dynasty poet Li Bai: Li Bai, also known as Li Po, is considered one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. He lived during the Tang dynasty (618-907) and is said to have visited Wenzhou during his travels.
  3. The Song dynasty painter Ma Yuan: Ma Yuan was a famous painter during the Song dynasty (960-1279). He was born in Wenzhou and is known for his landscape paintings.
  4. The Taiping Rebellion: This rebellion took place from 1850 to 1864 and was led by Hong Xiuquan, who claimed to be Jesus’ younger brother. It started in Guangxi province but spread to other parts of China, including Wenzhou.
