Xigazê is a city located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, Situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. It is considered to be one of Tibet’s most significant cultural and economic hubs, With a rich history dating back to ancient times. Tibetan Buddhism has been an important center for centuries. Tashilhunpo Monastery is one of Xigazê’s most famous landmarks, Founded in 1447 by Gendun Drup, The first Dalai Lama.   4. The Panchen Lama controversy: In 1995, after the death of the tenth Panchen Lama recognized by both Chinese government and Dalai Lama, two different boys were identified as his reincarnation which led to a major controversy around religious freedom.
  5. Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso (Panchen Lama IX): He played an important role in Tibetan history during his time serving as Regent for Tibet from 1926-1950.

Cultural Events

  1. The Shoton Festival is a famous cultural event in Xigazê, also known as the Yoghurt Festival. It is held in August or September and involves yoghurt consumption, traditional Tibetan opera performances, and other cultural activities.
  2. The Saga Dawa Festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha and is celebrated on the full moon day in May or June. People visit monasteries to offer prayers and participate in religious ceremonies during this festival.
  3. The Tashilhunpo Monastery Thangka Unveiling Ceremony takes place during the Shoton Festival at Tashilhunpo Monastery where a large thangka (Buddhist painting) is unveiled for public display.
  4. Although not directly held in Xigazê but nearby Nagqu County, the Nagqu Horse Racing Festival attracts many visitors from Xigazê every year during August or September. It features horse racing competitions along with traditional Tibetan dance performances.
  5. The Gyantse Damar Festival occurs at Gyantse town near Xigazê every year during July or August to celebrate Lord Buddha’s victory over evil forces. A colorful procession showcasing local culture through music, dance, costumes etc., is its highlight.
  6. The Losar (Tibetan New Year) celebration occurs around February/March each year according to lunar calendar by Tibetans across China including those living in Xigaze region with lots of feasting, drinking Chang (Tibetan beer), dancing etc.
