Xinhualu is a bustling district situated in the heart of Chengdu, The capital city of Sichuan province in China. Noteable History

  1. The Xinhua News Agency was founded on November 7, 1931, on Xinhualu.
  2. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Xinhua News Agency moved its headquarters from Nanjing to Beijing and settled on Xinhualu.
  3. During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), many Red Guards marched along Xinhualu to protest against traditional culture and authority.
  4. In 1989, during the Tiananmen Square protests, thousands of students marched along Xinhualu towards Tiananmen Square demanding democracy and freedom.

Notable People:

  1. Mao Zedong: The founder of modern China lived in a house on Xinhualu for several years before his death in September 1976.
  2. Deng Xiaoping: The Chinese statesman who led China through economic reforms from 1978 until his retirement in 1992 also lived near Xinhualu for many years.
  3. Zhou Enlai: A prominent Chinese Communist Party leader who served as Premier of the People’s Republic of China from October 1949 until his death in January 1976 also lived near Xinhualu for many years.
  4. Hu Yaobang: A former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China who played a key role during political reforms died suddenly at his home on April 15th1990 located at No.5 Fuyuan Lane (southwest corner with Xinhualu).
