The city is situated on the Mahoning River and was once known as the Steel Valley due to its prominence in the steel industry during the 20th century. The history of Youngstown dates back to the early 19th century when it was first settled by European immigrants. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to its thriving steel mills and manufacturing industries.

At one point, Youngstown was home to over 50 steel mills which employed thousands of workers.
