Ahvāz is a city located in the southwestern part of Iran, On the banks of the Karun River. It is the capital of Khuzestan province and one of the largest cities in Iran. The city has a rich history that dates back to ancient times, With evidence of human settlements dating back to 5, 000 BCE. Ahvāz has been an important center for trade and commerce since ancient times due to its strategic location at the crossroads between Mesopotamia and Persia.

The city was also an important cultural center during various periods in history, Including during the Sassanid Empire when it was known as Hūzestān. One of Ahvāz’s most notable landmarks is its magnificent suspension bridge over Karun River which connects two parts of Ahvaz together. This bridge is considered one of Iran’s architectural wonders and attracts many visitors each year. The climate in Ahvāz is hot and dry, With temperatures reaching up to 50°C (122°F) during summer months. This climate makes it challenging for agriculture; however, Rice fields can be seen throughout some parts near Karun River.

The economy in Ahvāz largely depends on oil production due to its proximity to some major oil fields in Iran. Additionally, Industries such as sugar production, Cement manufacturing and petrochemicals are also significant contributors to Ahvaz’s economy. One must visit Shadegan Wetland while visiting Ahwaz which is home to rare species like marsh crocodiles along with other wildlife species like flamingos etc.. Another attraction worth visiting here includes The Museum Of Contemporary Art which showcases works by Iranian artists from different periods.

  1. Battle of Ahvaz: A significant battle occurred in Ahvaz during World War I, where British and Ottoman forces fought against each other.
  2. Shapur II: The Sassanid king Shapur II constructed a palace in Ahvaz during his reign from 309 to 379 CE.
  3. Arab Conquest: In the seventh century, Arab armies conquered Ahvaz and made it part of the Islamic Caliphate.
  4. Khuzestan Uprising: In 1979, a major uprising took place in Khuzestan province, including Ahvaz, against the newly established Islamic Republic of Iran.

  8. Hoveyzeh Marshes massacre: In 1988, Iranian forces killed thousands of political prisoners near Hoveyzeh marshes outside Ahvaz as part of a nationwide purge known as The Massacre.
  9. Mirza Hassan Shirazi: A prominent Shia scholar who lived in the late nineteenth century and wrote many books on Islamic jurisprudence and ethics.
  10. Nader Shah Afshar: One of Iran’s most powerful rulers who was born near present-day Ahvaz; he conquered much of Central Asia and India during his reign from 1736 to 1747 CE.
