Noteable History

1. The Taíno people originally inhabited Baní, a town in the Caribbean.
2. Christopher Columbus claimed the island of Hispaniola for Spain during his second voyage to the Caribbean in 1496. In 1503, the Spanish established a settlement in Baní.
3. Antonio de Montesinos delivered a famous sermon denouncing Spanish colonizers’ mistreatment of Indigenous peoples in 1511.
4. Enriquillo was an Indigenous leader who rebelled against Spanish rule in Hispaniola during the early 16th century.
5. Rafael Trujillo ruled over the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961 as a dictator, and many people from Baní were involved with his regime, including some of his most notorious henchmen.
