Bor is a city situated in Jonglei state, South Sudan on the eastern bank of the White Nile River. It is one of the largest cities in South Sudan and serves as a significant commercial center for the region. The city has a population of approximately 300, 000 people, With most residents belonging to the Dinka ethnic group. Bor has a rich history dating back to pre-colonial times when it was an essential trading hub for ivory and slaves.

During colonial times, Bor became an administrative center under British rule and served as a base for Christian missionaries who established schools and hospitals in the area. Despite being one of South Sudan’s largest cities, Bor has faced challenges related to infrastructure development due to years of conflict and neglect. However, Recent efforts by both local authorities and international aid organizations have seen significant progress made towards improving access to basic services such as clean water, Healthcare facilities, Education institutions and electricity. One notable landmark in Bor is Jonglei State University which was established in 2013.

The university offers degree programs across various fields including business management, Agriculture science, Engineering amongst others. The institution plays an essential role in providing higher education opportunities for students from across South Sudan. The economy of Bor primarily relies on agriculture with most residents engaging in subsistence farming or livestock rearing for their livelihoods. Cattle are particularly significant to Dinka culture with many traditional ceremonies revolving around cattle ownership such as dowry payments during marriage ceremonies. In recent years there have been several attempts at peacebuilding initiatives between different communities living within Jonglei state.

In 2020 President Salva Kiir visited Bor where he held talks with local leaders aimed at promoting reconciliation between rival groups living within Jonglei state. Overall Bor remains a vibrant cultural hub that showcases traditional Dinka customs while also serving as an important commercial center for trade within South Sudan’s broader economy. Despite ongoing challenges related to infrastructure development and conflict resolution, The city and its residents remain hopeful for a brighter future.

Noteable History

  1. The Bor Massacre: In 1991, the town of Bor was the site of a massacre by rebel forces led by Riek Machar against Dinka civilians. Thousands were killed in what is considered one of the worst atrocities in South Sudan’s history.
  2. John Garang: John Garang was a prominent political figure in South Sudan and played a key role in the country’s struggle for independence from Sudan. He was born in Bor and spent much of his early life there.

  8. Twic East National Park: Located about 100 km from Bor town this park has a variety of wildlife including giraffes, zebras and ostriches.

    It should be noted that political instability and civil war have resulted in a decrease or no celebration at all for some of these events mentioned above which are subject to change depending on security situations at any given time/location within South Sudan territory including Jonglei State where Bor Town is located.

    • It’s possible that the city doesn’t have a thriving culinary scene due to its recent conflict history and limited infrastructure.
    • Nonetheless, there may be some small local eateries that serve traditional dishes such as stews made with meat and vegetables or flatbread called Kisra.

      1. Bor National Park: Located on the eastern bank of the Nile River, visitors can observe wildlife such as elephants, giraffes, and antelopes.
