The city has a rich history that dates back to the Edo period when it was known for its production of silk textiles. One of the most notable attractions in Chikushino is Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. This shrine was built in honor of Sugawara no Michizane, A scholar and politician who lived during the Heian period.

The shrine attracts thousands of visitors each year and is particularly popular during plum blossom season when the trees surrounding it bloom with beautiful pink flowers.
