Cuito is a city located in the Bié Province of central Angola. It sits on the banks of the Cuito River and has a population of around 150, 000 people. The city is known for its cultural heritage and historical significance. Portuguese explorers founded Cuito in the 16th century as a trading post. Over time, It became an important center for trade and commerce, Dealing in goods such as ivory, Gold, And slaves. During colonial times, Cuito was an administrative center for Portugal’s African territories.

In recent times, Cuito has experienced conflict and war during Angola’s civil war from 1975 to 2002. The city suffered significant damage during two sieges in 1993-94 and 1998-99. Despite these challenges, Cuito has undergone redevelopment efforts since peace was established in Angola. Infrastructure projects like roads and bridges have improved access to the city from other parts of Angola. There have also been efforts to rebuild damaged buildings.   1. The Battle of Cuito Cuanavale in 1988 was a significant conflict between the South African Defence Force (SADF), Angolan Armed Forces (FAPLA), and Cuban troops.   2. Jonas Savimbi, an Angolan politician and military leader, led the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) during the country’s civil war. He was killed in 2002 during an ambush by government forces.
