The town has a rich history dating back to the 13th century when it was known for its agricultural land and fishing industry. However, It was during the 20th century that Dagenham became well-known for its automotive industry with the opening of Ford’s factory in 1931. The Ford factory became one of the largest employers in Dagenham, Providing jobs to thousands of people until it closed down in 2002.
