Ekibastuz is a city located in northeastern Kazakhstan on the banks of the Ertis River. Since its establishment in 1957, It has been one of the largest coal mining centers in the country and a significant contributor to Kazakhstan’s economy. The name Ekibastuz translates to two bastions, Referring to two hills located in the area. The city has a population of approximately 150, 000 people and covers an area of around 1, 500 square kilometers. It is home to several large coal mines that produce over 100 million tons of coal annually for both domestic consumption and export purposes.

Despite its focus on mining today, Ekibastuz has a rich cultural heritage dating back to Soviet times when it was founded as part of an effort to develop natural resources throughout Kazakhstan. The city features many examples of Soviet-era architecture such as large apartment blocks and administrative buildings.
