2. George Washington stayed at a house in Hempstead during the American Revolution that served as his headquarters for a short time.
3. In 1784, Samuel Seabury was ordained as Bishop of Connecticut at Hempstead’s first Episcopal consecration in America.
4. Frederick Douglass spoke at a rally in St. James African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, an abolitionist and former slave, in Hempstead back in 1839.
5. During the Civil War, Union soldiers camped on Long Island and used Hempstead as a base of operations back in 1863.
6. Lionel Hampton was born there – he was a Jazz musician – born on Hempsread back on 1908.

1. Hofstra Pride: The Hofstra Pride is the athletic program of Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The university fields 17 varsity teams, including basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and wrestling.
2. New York Lizards: The New York Lizards is a professional lacrosse team based in Hempstead. They were founded in 2001 as the Long Island Lizards and have won three Major League Lacrosse championships.
3. Nassau Community College Lions: The Nassau Community College Lions are the athletic teams of Nassau Community College in nearby Garden City. They field teams in basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball and other sports.
4. Long Island Rough Riders: The Long Island Rough Riders are a semi-professional soccer team based in nearby Rockville Centre but play their home games at Hofstra University’s James M Shuart Stadium.
