  3. Mikhail Kalashnikov, the inventor of the AK-47 assault rifle, was born in Kurya, a village near Izhevsk. He later moved to Izhevsk where he worked at the local arms factory and developed his famous weapon.
  4. In 1918, Izhevsk became part of the newly formed Udmurt Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within Russia.
  5. During Stalin’s purges in 1937-38, many people were arrested and executed in Izhevsk including several high-ranking officials of the Udmurt ASSR government.
