Kasulu is a small town situated in the Kigoma region of Tanzania, East Africa. It borders Burundi to the west and Lake Tanganyika to the east, And has a population of approximately 100, 000 people. The town is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Several ethnic groups coexist peacefully in Kasulu including Nyamwezi, Ha, Haya, Banyambo and Banyankole. Each group has its unique language, Customs and traditions that are celebrated during various cultural festivals throughout the year.

Lake Tanganyika is one of Kasulu’s most notable landmarks; it stretches over 673 km from northern Zambia to southern Burundi providing a source of livelihood for many locals who engage in fishing activities using traditional fishing methods such as hand nets and dugout canoes. Agriculture also plays an important role in Kasulu’s economy with crops such as maize, Beans and cassava being grown on small-scale farms. The town also has several markets where locals sell their produce alongside other goods such as clothing and household items.

Kasulu boasts several tourist attractions such as Gombe Stream National Park which is famous for its chimpanzee population made famous by Jane Goodall’s research work. Other attractions include Kalambo Falls which stands at over 200 meters high making it one of Africa’s tallest waterfalls.     Noteable History

    1. Kasulu Refugee Camp is one of the largest refugee camps in Tanzania, established in 1993 to assist refugees fleeing conflicts in neighboring countries like Burundi, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo.
    2. Dr. David Livingstone explored East Africa and passed through Kasulu on his way to Lake Tanganyika in 1871.
    3. During the late 19th century, Kasulu was part of German East Africa and served as a trading center for ivory and other goods.
    4. In the 1950s and early 1960s, Kasulu played a role in Tanzania’s struggle for independence from British colonial rule.
    5. Julius Nyerere visited Kasulu several times during his presidency to promote development projects in the area; he was also the first president of Tanzania.
    6. The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation has its headquarters located in Kasulu; it was established after Julius Nyerere’s death in 1999.
    7. In July 1967, African leaders met at Kigoma (nearby city) and issued a declaration calling for greater unity among African nations while criticizing Western imperialism – this declaration had an impact on Tanzanian politics as well.

Thousands of refugees from Burundi fled into Tanzania via various border points including those located around Kigoma region including areas like Nyarugusu camp which is near to kasulu town due to political violence that erupted after President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would seek an unconstitutional third term during the Burundian Civil War Refugees Crisis (2015).
