Klerksdorp is a city located in the North West Province of South Africa, Approximately 170 km southwest of Johannesburg. The city has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when it was established as a mining town during the gold rush era.   1. The discovery of gold in Klerksdorp in 1886 led to the establishment of the town and the development of the mining industry in South Africa.
  2. The Battle of Klerksdorp took place during the Second Boer War on 22 March 1902. British forces under General Horace Smith-Dorrien defeated Boer forces commanded by General Koos de la Rey.
  3. Dr Jameson’s Raid was an unsuccessful attempt by British colonial statesman Leander Starr Jameson to overthrow the government of Paul Kruger and annex Transvaal (now Gauteng) in December 1895. The raid began near Klerksdorp.
  4. Mahatma Gandhi spent some time in Klerksdorp during his early years as a lawyer in South Africa, where he fought against discrimination against Indian immigrants.
  5. Former South African president Jacob Zuma was born near Klerksdorp, in Nkandla, a rural area located about 300 km away from the town.
