  1. On April 26, 2019, a series of coordinated bombings occurred in Sri Lanka, including an attack on the Zion Church in Batticaloa and St. Sebastian’s Church in Negombo. Another attack took place at the Kattankudy mosque in Mawanella.
  2. Abdul Cader Shahul Hameed was a prominent Muslim politician and Member of Parliament from Mawanella who served as Minister of Posts and Telecommunications from 1977 to 1988.
  3. Al-Hilal Football Club is a football club based in Mawanella that has played in the Sri Lanka Football Premier League since its inception.
  4. The Weweldeniya Rebellion was a rebellion against British colonial rule led by Keppetipola Disawe that began near Weweldeniya town close to Mawanella between 1817-1818.
  5. The Mahaweli Development Project aimed to develop agriculture and hydroelectric power generation by building dams across rivers including the Mahaweli River that flows through Mawanella.
  6. During medieval times (14th-15th century), Gampola Kingdom had its capital located near present-day Mawanella town.
