Miluo Chengguanzhen is a bustling city located in Hunan Province, China. It sits on the banks of Miluo River and covers 1, 402 square kilometers with a population of around 200, 000 people. The city has a long and storied past that dates back to the Han Dynasty. It was once an important hub for trade and travel between north and south China. Today, It’s known for its agricultural production of rice, Tea, And oranges. One of the most famous attractions in Miluo Chengguanzhen is the Qu Yuan Memorial Hall.

This hall pays homage to Qu Yuan who was a prominent poet during ancient China’s Warring States period. He is renowned for his patriotic poetry that expressed his love for his country and people. Another popular destination within Miluo Chengguanzhen is Dongting Lake Scenic Area which spans over 300 square kilometers including several islands with unique flora and fauna species such as Chinese sturgeon, Water chestnuts, Reeds, Wild ducks along with cranes among others.

Noteable History

  1. The Battle of Miluo River: This battle took place in 278 BC between the states of Chu and Qin during the Warring States period. It is said that Qu Yuan, a famous poet and politician from Chu, threw himself into the river after witnessing his state’s defeat.
  2. Qu Yuan: As mentioned above, Qu Yuan was a prominent figure from Chu who is widely regarded as one of China’s greatest poets. He is also known for his political views and his loyalty to his state.
  3. Li Bai: Li Bai (also known as Li Po) was a famous Tang dynasty poet who was born in what is now modern-day Miluo Chengguanzhen.
  4. Mao Zedong: Mao Zedong, the founder of the People’s Republic of China, spent some time in Miluo during his early years as a revolutionary.
  5. Huang Xing: Huang Xing was a key figure in the Chinese Revolution against the Qing dynasty and later became an important military leader during the Republic of China era. He was born near Miluo Chengguanzhen.
