Qardho is a city in the northeastern region of Somalia, Located in the Puntland state. It is situated on the eastern side of the Galgala hills and lies approximately 800 km from Mogadishu, The capital city of Somalia. The population is estimated to be around 50, 000 people who are mainly pastoralists and traders. The name Qardho means the place where camels rest in Somali language. This reflects its history as an important stopover for camel caravans travelling from Ethiopia to coastal towns such as Bosaso and Garowe to trade goods such as frankincense, Myrrh, Ivory and spices.

Qardho has a diverse cultural heritage with various ethnic groups living together peacefully including Somalis, Bantus and Arabs. The city has several historical landmarks that are worth visiting such as ancient tombs dating back to pre-Islamic times. One of these tombs is believed to be that of Sheikh Isaaq Bin Ahmed Al Hashimi who was one of the founding fathers of Somali society. The economy revolves around livestock rearing and trade with neighboring countries like Ethiopia. The town also serves as a commercial hub for surrounding areas with many small businesses selling goods ranging from foodstuffs to clothing items.

Education plays an important role in Qardho’s development with several primary schools serving local children while secondary schools can be found in nearby towns like Garowe or Bosaso. Additionally, There are plans underway by Puntland government to establish a university campus in Qardho which will provide higher education opportunities for local students. Despite being relatively remote compared to other major cities in Somalia, Qardho has seen some development initiatives over recent years including road construction projects connecting it to other towns within Puntland state as well as solar power installations providing electricity access for residents.
