Qiqihar, Located in northeastern China’s Heilongjiang Province, Is an agricultural center for rice and wheat production. The city has a long history dating back over 3, 000 years when it was first inhabited by nomadic tribes. Today, Qiqihar is a bustling metropolis with over 5 million people. Zhalong Nature Reserve is one of the most significant landmarks in Qiqihar. Covering an area of over 2, 000 square kilometers, It’s home to more than 300 species of birds and animals such as red-crowned cranes and sika deer. Longsha Park is another notable attraction with beautiful gardens featuring various types of flowers.

Several museums showcase local culture and history such as the Museum of Local History and Culture which showcases artifacts from ancient times up to modern times including items related to agriculture and industry. Noteable History

  1. Qiqihar was founded in the early 17th century as a small trading post and military garrison.
  2. During the Manchukuo era (1932-1945), Qiqihar was the capital of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, which was created by Japan in Northeast China.
  3. During World War II, Qiqihar became an important base for anti-Japanese resistance forces in Northeast China.
  4. In 1935, during the Long March, Mao Zedong and his forces passed through Qiqihar on their way to Yan’an.
  5. Zhang Xueliang lived in exile in Qiqihar after he was released from prison by the Chinese government in 1956.
  6. Li Hongzhang, a prominent statesman and general during the late Qing dynasty and early Republic of China period, was born near Qiqihar.
  7. Wang Jinxi worked at Daqing Oilfield near Qiqihar during its development phase and was known as Iron Man.
  8. He Long spent some time living in exile in Qiqihar after he fell out with Mao Zedong; he was a prominent Communist military commander and politician during the Chinese Civil War and early People’s Republic of China period.
  9. In 1946, communist forces attacked a train carrying Nationalist troops on Harbin-Qiqihar Railway near Suihua County outside of Qiquhar leading to one of many incidents that eventually led to full-scale civil war between Nationalists and Communists resulting ultimately with Communist victory over Nationalists establishing People’s Republic Of China.
