Shenyang is the largest city in Liaoning Province, Located in northeastern China. It has a rich history dating back over 8, 000 years when it was known as Hou City. Throughout its history, Shenyang has been ruled by various dynasties including the Qing Dynasty and Manchu Empire. Today, It is a bustling metropolis with a population of over 8 million people. Mukden Palace, Also known as Shenyang Imperial Palace, Is one of the most iconic landmarks in Shenyang. It was built during the Qing Dynasty and served as one of two imperial palaces for Emperor Nurhaci and his descendants.

The palace complex covers an area of 60, 000 square meters and features over 300 rooms. Beiling Park is another must-visit destination in Shenyang which houses two mausoleums belonging to two Qing Dynasty emperors: Huang Taiji (the second emperor) and his son Emperor Qianlong (the sixth emperor). The park covers an area of approximately 3 square kilometers with beautiful gardens, Lakes, Pavilions among other attractions.

Noteable History

  1. Mukden Incident: On September 18, 1931, the Japanese army staged a fake attack on their own railway in Shenyang (then known as Mukden), which they used as a pretext to invade and occupy Northeast China.
  2. Zhang Xueliang: Known as the Young Marshal, Zhang was a Chinese warlord who controlled much of Northeast China during the early 20th century. He famously kidnapped Chiang Kai-shek in 1936 and forced him to form a united front against the Japanese.
  3. Imperial Palace of the Qing Dynasty: Located in Shenyang’s old city center, this palace was built by Emperor Nurhaci in the early 17th century and served as the residence of Qing emperors during their visits to Northeast China.
  4. Marshal Lin Biao: A prominent military leader during Mao Zedong’s rule, Lin Biao was born and raised in Hubei Province but spent much of his career stationed in Shenyang.
  5. Liaoning Provincial Museum: This museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts from throughout Liaoning Province’s history, including many items related to Manchu culture and Qing dynasty imperial life.
  6. Fengtian Government Building: Built by Japan during its occupation of Northeast China, this grand building served as headquarters for both puppet governments established by Japan during World War II.
  7. Zhao Yiman: A revolutionary martyr who fought against both foreign imperialism and domestic corruption, Zhao is regarded as one of Shenyang’s most famous historical figures.
  8. Hunhe River Scenic Area: Located just outside downtown Shenyang, this scenic area features beautiful natural scenery along with several historical sites related to ancient Chinese civilization.
  9. Wei Zhengmin: A member of CPC, who devoted himself into anti-Japanese activities after he graduated from high school, and he became one member among Three Heroes that were admired by people in Northeast China.

  1. Shenyang FC is a professional football club that was established in 2019 and is located in Shenyang, China. They are currently playing in the China League Two and are owned by Vantone Holdings, a Chinese conglomerate.
  2. The Liaoning Flying Leopards are an established basketball team based in Shenyang, China. Founded in 1995, they have won three championships of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
