Shuanghe is a small town located in the southwestern region of China, Specifically in the Yunnan province. The town sits at an altitude of 1, 800 meters above sea level and has a population of approximately 10, 000 individuals. Shuanghe is famous for its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. One of the top tourist attractions in Shuanghe is the Shilin Stone Forest which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site comprises thousands of limestone pillars that resemble trees and other natural forms.

The stone forest spans about 350 square kilometers and provides visitors with an opportunity to explore unique geological formations. Another popular spot to visit in Shuanghe is Jianshui Ancient City which dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). The city features well-preserved ancient architecture with traditional Chinese courtyards and gardens. Visitors can also explore Confucius Temple which is one of China’s largest Confucian temples. The town also boasts several hot springs that are believed to have healing properties due to their high mineral content.

Noteable History

  1. Shuanghe was an important stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road that connected Yunnan Province with Tibet.
  2. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Shuanghe was a military outpost guarding against invasion from Tibet.
  3. In 1935, during the Long March of the Chinese Communist Party, Mao Zedong and his troops passed through Shuanghe.
  4. The famous Chinese poet Gu Cheng spent part of his childhood in Shuanghe.
