Simi Valley is a city located in the southeastern part of Ventura County, California, United States. The city is situated in the Simi Hills and surrounded by beautiful scenery. It has a population of around 126, 000 people and covers an area of approximately 42 square miles. Simi Valley has a rich history and culture dating back to the Chumash Indians who were its first inhabitants. Noteable History

  1. The Chumash Indians were the first inhabitants of the Simi Valley area, dating back over 10,000 years.
  2. The Rancho Simi land grant was given to Francisco Javier Pico in 1795 by Spanish authorities.
  3. In 1876, a stagecoach robbery occurred in Simi Valley that resulted in the death of three people and the capture of one of the robbers.
  4. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a bill establishing the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) on a hilltop above Simi Valley to conduct nuclear research and testing.
  5. On January 28, 1986, Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after takeoff from Cape Canaveral killing all seven crew members including astronaut Ronald McNair who grew up in Simi Valley.
  6. In April 1992, four LAPD officers were acquitted for using excessive force against Rodney King which sparked riots across Los Angeles County including parts of Ventura County such as Ventura and Oxnard but not Simi Valley which was largely unaffected by violence due to its conservative demographics and police presence.
