Vidisha is a small city located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is situated on the banks of the Betwa River and is known for its rich cultural heritage and ancient history. The city has been inhabited since prehistoric times and has seen the rule of various dynasties such as Mauryas, Guptas, Kushans, And Mughals. One of the major attractions in Vidisha is the Heliodorus Pillar which dates back to 113 BC. The pillar was erected by Heliodorus who was a Greek ambassador to India during that time.
It bears an inscription which talks about his devotion to Lord Vishnu. Another famous attraction in Vidisha is the Udayagiri Caves which are a group of rock-cut caves dating back to 4th century BC. These caves were used by Buddhist monks as shelter and meditation centers during ancient times. Vidisha also houses one of the oldest surviving temples in India – Bijamandal Temple which dates back to 11th century AD. The temple was built by King Narvarman who ruled over Malwa region during that time.
The city also boasts several other historical monuments such as Gyaraspur Fort, Bajramath Temple, Dashavtar Temple etc., Standing testimony to Vidisha’s rich cultural heritage and architectural marvels.
