  1. Sizhan was the site of a major battle during the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), which was one of the bloodiest civil wars in Chinese history.
  2. The famous poet Li Bai (701-762) is said to have visited Sizhan during his travels throughout China.
  3. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Sizhan was an important center for salt production and trade.
  4. The Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) scholar Wu Jingzi (1701-1754) wrote his satirical novel The Scholars while living in Sizhan.
  5. In 1949, after the Communist Party took control of China, Sizhan became part of Guangdong Province.
