Tangshan is a city in Hebei Province, China, Situated on the eastern coast of Bohai Sea. Covering an area of approximately 13, 500 square kilometers and with a population of over 7 million people, Tangshan is known for its history, Natural beauty and industrial development. The city has a long history dating back to the Neolithic Age and became an important commercial center during the Ming Dynasty. However, In 1976 it suffered one of the deadliest earthquakes in modern history which killed over 240, 000 people.

Despite this tragedy, Tangshan has rebuilt itself into one of China’s most prosperous cities with thriving industries including coal mining, Steel production and petrochemicals manufacturing. Tourist attractions include Kailuan National Mine Park which showcases China’s coal mining culture and Luanzhou Ancient City which dates back over 1, 700 years ago. Natural attractions include Yanshan Mountain Range and several beaches along Bohai Sea. The government has also invested heavily in environmental protection initiatives such as afforestation programs aimed at reducing air pollution caused by industrial activities. Noteable History

  1. The Great Tangshan Earthquake occurred on July 28, 1976, and was a catastrophic earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8. It resulted in the death of over 240,000 people and injured more than 160,000.
  2. Li Dazhao was a prominent Chinese intellectual who co-founded the Communist Party of China (CPC). He was born in Tangshan in 1889.
  3. Liu Shaoqi played an important role during the early years of the People’s Republic of China and was one of Mao Zedong’s closest allies before falling out with him during the Cultural Revolution. He was born near Tangshan in Ningxiang County in 1898.
  4. Xu Beihong is one of China’s most famous modern artists known for his ink wash paintings and oil paintings depicting horses and other animals. He was born near Tangshan in Yixing County in 1895.
  5. Zhang Zuolin controlled much of northeastern China as a warlord during the Republic era until he was assassinated by Japanese agents on a train near Tangshan on June 4, 1928.
  6. Yang Jingyu fought against Japanese occupation forces during World War II as well as Nationalist forces during the Chinese Civil War as a communist guerrilla fighter until he was killed by Nationalist troops near Tangshan on December16,1947.
  7. Jiang Wenli is an award-winning actress known for her roles in films such as Farewell My Concubine and The Soong Sisters. She grew up in Tangshan although she was born in Tianjin.
  8. Zhao Benshan is popularly known for his performances on CCTV’s annual Spring Festival Gala program. He is also recognized for his film roles such as The King of Masks. He hails from Boxiang County near Tangshan where he was born in 1957.
