Tatalon is a barangay or village in Quezon City, Philippines, Situated in the northern part of the city. It is bounded by other barangays such as San Roque, Mariana, And Masambong. The village has a land area of 0.75 square kilometers and a population of around 40, 000 people. One of Tatalon’s main attractions is the Tatalon Shrine or Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, Which was built during the 1950s. It has become a popular pilgrimage site for Catholics during Holy Week due to its replica of the grotto in Lourdes, France where Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette Soubirous.

Another landmark in Tatalon is the Amoranto Sports Complex named after former Manila Mayor Arsenio H. Lacson also known as Amang. The complex features various sports facilities such as an oval track, Football field, Basketball court and swimming pool among others. Tatalon also has several educational institutions such as TIP (Technological Institute of the Philippines), St. Joseph’s College Quezon City and Quezon City Polytechnic University – Tandang Sora Campus providing quality education to students living within or near its vicinity.

The village also boasts its own public market where residents can purchase fresh produce at affordable prices along with numerous small businesses that cater to different needs like sari-sari stores (small convenience stores), Carinderias (local eateries) and barbershops among others. Despite being located within an urban area there are still pockets of greenery found within Tatalon like its community garden promoting sustainable living practices through urban farming techniques like composting and vermiculture.

Noteable History

  1. Tatalon was initially part of San Juan del Monte until it became a part of Quezon City in 1948.
  2. The area got its name from the Spanish word tatalón, which means to jump high. According to legend, soldiers stationed in the region during the Spanish colonial period would often jump over a small creek that ran through it.
  3. In 1950, the Philippine government established Tala Leprosarium in Tatalon to provide treatment for leprosy patients.
  4. Former President Corazon Aquino is one of the most notable personalities linked with Tatalon as she lived there during her childhood.
  5. Other famous people who have lived or worked in Tatalon include actor Fernando Poe Jr., singer Imelda Papin, and journalist Mel Tiangco.
