One of the main attractions in Tiruvottiyūr is the Vadivudai Amman Temple, Which dates back to over 1, 200 years ago.

Noteable History

  1. Thiruvottiyur Temple is a historically significant site dating back to the 7th century AD. It is dedicated to Lord Veera Raghava Perumal and is one of the 108 Divya Desams.
  2. Saint Manickavasagar, a Tamil poet and saint, was born in Tiruvottiyur and wrote many devotional songs in praise of Lord Shiva.
  3. During the medieval period, the Chola dynasty ruled over Tiruvottiyur and constructed many temples.
  4. In 1522, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama invaded Tiruvottiyur and destroyed many temples after establishing trade relations with India.
  5. During British rule in India, Tiruvottiyur became an important center for trade due to its proximity to Chennai port.
  6. C.N Annadurai was a prominent politician from Tamil Nadu who served as Chief Minister from 1967-1969 and lived in Tiruvottruyr for some time before moving to Chennai.
  7. Rajinikanth spent his childhood days at Shivaji Rao Gaekwad street at Thirvottruyr before moving on to Bangalore. He is one of India’s biggest movie stars.
  8. Vallalar Ramalinga Swamigal, an eminent spiritual leader lived here for some years.
