Tongchuanshi, Also known as Tongchuan, Is a city located in the northwest of Shaanxi province in China. It is situated on the banks of the Wei River and is surrounded by mountains on three sides. The city has a population of approximately 700, 000 people and covers an area of 3, 882 square kilometers. The history of Tongchuanshi dates back to over 2, 000 years ago when it was established as a military fortress during the Han Dynasty. The city played an important role in protecting China’s northern borders from foreign invasions.

Over time, It became an important center for trade and commerce due to its strategic location along the Silk Road. One of the main attractions in Tongchuanshi is its rich cultural heritage. The city boasts several historical sites such as the Yuhua Palace which was built during the Tang Dynasty and served as a residence for emperors visiting Tongchuanshi. Another notable attraction is the Yaozhou Kiln Ruins Museum which showcases ancient Chinese pottery dating back to over 1, 400 years ago.

Tongchuanshi also has several natural attractions that draw visitors from all over China including Mount Liupan which stands at 2, 882 meters tall and offers breathtaking views of surrounding landscapes.   1. Tongchuan was an important coal mining center during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).
  2. In 1935, the Chinese Red Army led by Mao Zedong passed through Tongchuan on their Long March.
  3. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945), Tongchuan was occupied by Japanese forces.
  4. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Tongchuan became a major industrial center for coal mining and metallurgy.
  5. Notable people from Tongchuanshi include Tang Jiaxuan, former Foreign Minister of China; Li Peng, former Premier of China; and Zhang Yimou, film director and cinematographer.
  6. The Yan’an Rectification Movement in 1942-43 had significant impact on Communist Party organizations throughout Shaanxi Province including in Tongchuanshi.
  7. In 1969, a massive earthquake struck Shaanxi province that caused widespread devastation in many cities including Tongchuanshi where thousands lost their lives and homes were destroyed.
  8. The city has also seen significant growth since economic reforms began under Deng Xiaoping’s leadership in the late 1970s leading to modernization of its infrastructure such as highways connecting it to other parts of China as well as expansion into new industries like tourism which have helped boost local economy over time.

  7. Huashan Mountain Scenic Area near Tongchuan City has an elevation 2 154 meters above sea level with a magnificent view from its peak as one of China’s Five Great Mountains.
  8. Xi’an City Wall has been preserved well since it was built during Ming dynasty around 1370 AD in Xi’an which is about an hour drive from Tongchuanshi.
  9. Huaqing Hot Springs have been a famous attraction since ancient times with hot springs pools surrounded by mountains located about half an hour drive away from Xianyang International Airport.
  10. Terracotta Army Museum features thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers that were buried alongside China’s first emperor to protect him in his afterlife which is located in Xi’an about two hours drive away from tongchuanshi.

  1. Tongchuan International Kite Festival is an annual event held in April, featuring kites from around the world and including kite-flying competitions and cultural performances.
  2. The Tongchuan Lantern Festival takes place on the 15th day of the first lunar month, showcasing colorful lantern displays, traditional food, and dragon dance performances.
  3. The Tongchuan Peony Festival is held in May each year to celebrate the city’s abundant peony flowers with exhibitions, cultural shows, and flower-viewing tours.
  4. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Tongchuan Dragon Boat Festival includes dragon boat races on local rivers and lakes as well as traditional food and music.
  5. The Tongchuan Shaanxi Opera Festival brings together performers from across China to showcase Shaanxi opera traditions through live shows and workshops.
  6. Chinese New Year celebrations in Tongchuanshi include fireworks displays, temple fairs, family gatherings for meals together (reunion dinners), red envelopes containing money given to children by elders or bosses at work etc., all culminating in a huge parade featuring lion dances and dragon dances through streets decorated with red lanterns.
