Xiangshui, A county-level city in eastern Jiangsu province, China, Is located on the north bank of the Yangtze River. With a population of around 1 million people and an area of 2, 158 square kilometers, Xiangshui is known for its natural beauty, Cultural heritage and thriving economy.   1. Xiangshui is a county located in Jiangsu Province, China.
  2. Wu Cheng’en, a famous Chinese novelist who lived during the Ming Dynasty, was born in Xiangshui County.
  3. Yang Shangkun, a prominent Chinese politician who served as President of China from 1988 to 1993, was also born in Xiangshui County back in 1907.
  4. Chen Yi played an important role as a military commander and politician during the Communist Party’s victory over Nationalists throughout the Chinese Civil War.
  5. Wang Jisi is another notable person who was born in Huangzhuang Village located within Xiangshui County. He currently serves as President of Peking University’s Institute of International and Strategic Studies.
  6. Li Lanqing served as Vice Premier under Jiang Zemin from 1998 to 2003; he too was born within Dongzhuang Village located within this county.
  7. Liu Jianhua is an acclaimed contemporary artist whose works have been exhibited worldwide including at Venice Biennale and Documenta Kassel exhibitions; he too hails from Jiuzhou Village located within Xiangshui County.
  8. One significant event that occurred in Xiangshui County was the chemical plant explosion on March 21, 2019. The explosion resulted in the loss of at least 78 lives and injured over 600 others.
