Zhanjiang is a coastal city located in the southwestern part of Guangdong province, China. It is situated on the Leizhou Peninsula and borders the South China Sea to its south. The city covers an area of 12, 490 square kilometers and has a population of over 8 million people. The history of Zhanjiang dates back to ancient times when it was known as Chikan. During the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), It served as an important port for maritime trade between China and Southeast Asia.

Later, During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD), Zhanjiang became a strategic military outpost due to its proximity to Hainan Island.
