Avcılar is a district in Istanbul, Turkey that is located on the European side. The district is situated on the coast of Marmara Sea and surrounded by other popular districts such as Beylikdüzü and Esenyurt. The name Avcılar means hunter in Turkish, Reflecting its past as an area where hunters used to go for hunting. One of the main attractions in Avcılar is its stunning coastline. The district has a long beach stretching over 5 kilometers with crystal clear waters and golden sand, Making it perfect for swimming, Sunbathing or simply enjoying a relaxing day at the beach.

Apart from its natural beauty, Avcılar also boasts several historical landmarks that are worth visiting. One of them is the ancient city walls that date back to Byzantine times. These walls were built to protect Constantinople (now Istanbul) from invaders and still stand tall today. Noteable History

  1. The Battle of Malazgirt, which marked the beginning of Turkish rule in Anatolia, took place near Avcılar in 1071.
  2. Mehmed II, also known as Mehmed the Conqueror, was an Ottoman Sultan who conquered Constantinople and built significant structures in Istanbul such as Topkapi Palace and Fatih Mosque.
  3. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded modern Turkey after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and served as its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938.
  4. In August 1999, a devastating earthquake struck northwestern Turkey including Avcılar, resulting in over 17,000 deaths and widespread destruction throughout the region.
  5. Istanbul University’s Avcılar Campus is one of several campuses operated by one of Turkey’s oldest and most prestigious universities.
  6. Hüseyin Avni Lifij was a renowned Turkish painter from 1886 to 1927 whose works are considered some of the best examples of early modernist art in Turkey.
  7. Yavuz Selim Mosque is an important Ottoman-era mosque built by Sultan Selim I near Avcılar on Istanbul’s European side to honor his father Sultan Bayezid II.
